The Future looks bright. The future looks.. bike! – Darren Lee

27 June 2023

Indoor cycling has become a popular fitness activity in recent years. It’s an effective way to get a cardio workout while also strengthening the lower body muscles. With the rise of technology and the ever-changing fitness trends, the future of indoor cycling looks bright. In this short blog I wanted to put down in writing how I think indoor cycling will evolve over the next few years to make the rider experience even better.

Personalised Experiences
One of the biggest trends in the fitness industry is personalisation. People want a workout that is tailored to their specific needs and goals. Indoor cycling will evolve to offer more personalised experiences. Fitness centres will use data and technology to track a person’s fitness level, heart rate, and other metrics to provide a workout that is unique to them. This will help people reach their fitness goals more efficiently and effectively.

Gamification
Gamification is the concept of adding game-like elements to non-game contexts. Indoor cycling will incorporate gamification to make workouts more fun and engaging. Fitness centres will use leaderboards, challenges, and other game-like elements to motivate people to push harder during their workouts. This will make indoor cycling more social, interactive, and competitive.

Virtual Reality
Virtual reality (VR) is becoming more popular in the fitness industry. It offers an immersive experience that can make workouts more exciting and engaging. Indoor cycling will evolve to incorporate VR technology, which will allow people to explore different environments and landscapes during their workouts. This will make indoor cycling feel more like an adventure than a workout.

Live Streaming
Live streaming has become a popular way to engage with audiences. Indoor cycling will evolve to offer live streaming classes, allowing people to participate in classes from anywhere in the world. This will make indoor cycling more accessible and convenient, as people can join classes from the comfort of their own home. It will also give people access to a wider variety of classes and instructors.

Music Integration
Music has always been an essential part of indoor cycling. It helps to create an energetic and motivational environment. Indoor cycling will evolve to integrate music more seamlessly into workouts. Fitness centres will use technology to adjust the music tempo based on a person’s heart rate or workout intensity. This will help people stay motivated and energised during their workouts. Music licenses will get more accessible and affordable in the fitness industry as music producers realise the use of music in fitness is to create a product for the benefit of human fitness. Ethically this is something certain producers realise they should support and that the consumption of that music is different to that of a standard music consumer.

Connected Fitness
Connected fitness is the concept of using technology to connect people to their fitness goals. Indoor cycling will evolve to offer more connected fitness experiences. Fitness centres will use data and technology to track a person’s fitness journey more and more, providing personalised feedback and recommendations. This will help people stay motivated and accountable during their fitness journey. The use of metric data with indoor cycling will act as a template for other exercise concepts as HIIT sessions and weight based sessions will offer directed session templates based on human output rather than just time and repetition. More equipment will utilise power as the prime metric for exercise and soon we will have power zone training for chest press, shoulder press and squat movements based on the relationship between mass and speed of movement. Power trainers will make the leap from pro sport into your local gym…. They will become the new breed of super trainers.

In conclusion, indoor cycling is evolving to provide more personalised, engaging, and immersive experiences. With the rise of technology and the changing fitness trends, the future of indoor cycling looks bright. People can expect to see more gamification, virtual reality, live streaming, music integration, and connected fitness experiences in the coming years. Indoor cycling is a great way to stay fit and healthy, and with these advancements, it will become even more accessible and enjoyable.
